Digital cytology has landed at BattLab

The UK’s largest independent laboratory BattLab has invested £30,000 in a brand new Motic slide scanner. This state-of-the-art machine has a six slide capacity trays that allow to scan multiple smears reducing the amount of labor the pathologist or the technician has to provide, improving work efficiency. This new technology of “whole slide imaging” is helping the team at BattLab to scan and convert traditional cytopathology and histopathology glass slides into digital images (digital slides) that can be viewed remotely by pathologists on a workstation using viewing software’s.

“The advantages are immense for both the laboratories and the veterinary clients” says Francesco Cian, senior clinical Pathologist at BattLab. As digital scanners start to appear in clinics around the UK it gives clinicians more option when it comes to sending cases digitally to pathologists who can work remotely who have the ability to share and discuss selected cases that may either be particularly challenging or may require a second opinion. This is also a hugely exciting tool for education, allowing remote audiences to share the view of the pathologist enhancing the learning experience.
